I have to ask myself the question, is the policing of fire protection within the city areas the same as outside the city areas? I get the feeling that they are not.
Fire Systems Ltd were invited to attend a Fire Alarm seminar up in Huddersfield. The seminar was about the management's systems to assist in the field of fire protection, fire alarm maintenance, fire alarm installation, etc.
The seminar was attended by many fire alarm companies.
A colleague and I drove up the night before and stayed at the hotel where the seminar was being held. Now being in the fire protection business for too many years that I care to remember, I generally out of habit, started to carry out my own personal fire risk assessment of the hotel. I checked the fire alarm, emergency lighting, fire extinguishers etc. Looking at wiring, I thought to myself that this hotel would have benefited from a wireless fire alarm. However, what I found glaringly obvious, were all the fire doors within the hotel were being kept open by purpose made metal door hooks.
In relation to the fire alarm system, our bedroom had a heat detector installed, instead of a smoke detector. I have to ask myself, what is the point of a heat detector in a bedroom, as this is now a non smoking building.
Firstly, the fire alarm company that services and maintains the fire alarm system, must have pointed out these non compliances, and secondly, the local fire officer who would inspect most hotels in his area, must also have noticed the metal hooks holding all the fire doors open?
Hence why I asked the question, is the policing of fire protection the same in the cities and rural areas? I think not.
