The UCKG in Newcastle is opting for a wireless fire alarm system.

London based fire alarm installer Fire Systems Ltd, have secured the contract to install a wireless fire alarm system in their new branch in Newcastle.

Fire Systems Ltd, were able to secure this order, as UCKG have been very please with the previous wireless fire alarm installations installed in many of their other branches.

The installation of this system is part of a major programme to upgrade and ensure all UCKG are conforming to the RRO legislation, which came out in 2005.

Fire Alarm not working – Landlord jailed

A landlord has been has been sent to jail for two and a half years after pleading guilty of breaching the Regulatory Reform order, at Norwich Crown Court.

A young woman living in one of his properties suffered severe burns.

Fire inspectors give evidence that Mr Billings failed to provide a working fire alarm, an insufficient number of fire doors, and adequate means of escape. In addition, gas appliances in the properties had not been serviced or properly inspected.
There was also no fire alarm maintenance or any records that fire alarm testing or the records of the testing were in place.

The fire broke out on 14 April 2009 in Ms Skalli’s bedsit, part of three adjoining houses in multiple occupation above retail premises in Magdalen Street, Norwich. Miss Skalli was unable to escape from the fire because her sash window could only be opened by 4 inches and the staircase was blocked by thick black smoke

Due to no operational fire alarm, not alarm was raised.

Fire Alarm False Alarms

It would appear that if you search the term “Fire alarm” in Twitter, the search brings up fire alarms and issues with false alarms.

When designing and installing a fire alarm, one of the criteria that is required is to keep the possibility to a minimum. The commissioning certificate has a section mentioning false alarms and soak testing the fire alarm system on completion.

Fire Alarm Exhibition in Birmingham 2010

The fire alarm exhibition was on at Birmingham this week and I somehow forgot all about it! However, I have to ask myself the question will there be anything new or worth viewing?

I recently attended the fire alarm exhibition at Fire south and after an hour or less, I had viewed all the fire alarm stands, including the wireless fire alarm section. There was nothing new for the wired or conventional fire systems only the wireless fire alarms had anything new to offer and that was from EMS, who had launch the first radio fire alarm system that complied with EN54.

These exhibitions are more of a talking shop. You meet colleagues from various fire alarm companies, and the fire industry in general, but apart from that, there is not much else going on.

Never mind, hopefully, I will remember next year.

Fire Alarms and fire doors?

As I visit more and more sites, I am finding a neglect towards the maintenance and upkeep of fire doors and their interface connections to fire alarm systems.

Fire doors wedge open with fire extinguishers or any other object that may happen to be near by is a criminal offence.

However, they are properly and legal ways of holding open a fire door. The most popular is provided a door magnet and this magnet is kept energised by the fire alarm system. The principle is the same whether it is a wired or wireless fire alarm. Another popular method is the dorguard. This unit is operated by the sounder of the fire alarm system. The dorguard looks for a constant noise (longer then 30s )over a certain decibel level and if these criteria’s are met the dorguard operates.
